I haven't measured the exact gap, but I'm pretty sure I only have slightly more than 6 inches between the ball and chuck. Drill bits are right around 6.5" long, with an inch of that going into the chuck, and I have just over 1/2" between the tip of the bit and the ball - enough to fully open the chuck and angle a bit in.

The bits we sell (and the bits included with any 80 lower jig) were specifically designed for gunsmithing.
